Die beste Reisezeit soll im Winter sein. Optimales Fotowetter. Allerdings musste ich jetzt im Mai in den Park fahren, weil ich einen Besuch sonst nicht anders unterbringen konnte.
The best travel time is supposed to be winter. This is the best weather for pictures as the sky is more clear.

Ich konnte mir im Grunde den kompletten Park in vollen 4 Tagen ansehen. Ich fahre einen Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, 2x2 und nicht 4x4. Es gibt viele Backcountry Roads. Allerdings sind die meisten nur mit einem 4x4 zu bewaeltigen. Ich werde aber auch hier welche vorstellen, die mit einem high clearance machbar sind. Allerdings alles auf eigene Gefahr!!! Ich uebernehme keine Gewaehr.
I can say that I have seen all the points in the park. I even did some backcountry road trips, but only the ones I was able to with my only 2x2 Jeep.
There are lots of backcountry roads in the DV. Mostly only drivable with a 4x4. You can get a map at the Visitor Center.
But I will write about the ones which I did with my Jeep. Please be careful in choosing your trips. Some of the roads are rough!!!

Bevor es richtig in den Park geht, schreibe ich noch kurz ueber die Stellen, dies oestlich vom Park gibt.
First, I wanna tell you a bit about the places east of the Death Valley.

Auf den Weg nach “Shoshone” kommt zur Linken ein historischer Meilenstein "Harry Wade Exit". Mit einigen 100 Pferdewagen wollte man damals den Spanish Trail durch die Wueste nach Kalifornien nehmen. Sie fuhren alle gemeinsam los. Der Wagen von Harry Wade schaffte es durch das Death Valley. Er fandt diesen Ausgang und rettete somit seine Familie.
On the way to the little town called Shoshone, you will find to your left a historical marker “Harry Wade Exit”. Some hundred wagons tried to make their way to California via the Spanish Trail. The wagon of Harry Wade made the way through the Death Valley. He found this way out and saved his family.

Der Ort Shoshone ist recht winzig. Auf der Strecke faehrt man an einer Tankstelle vorbei sowie einem Restaurant und einem Visitor Center. Wenige Uebernachtungsmoeglichkeiten sind auch vorhanden.
The little town (can you call it a town?) Shoshone offers a gas station, a restaurant and a Visitor Center. Accommodations available.

Auf der Strecke ist die Hoechstgeschwindigkeit 65 mph. Allerdings fahren alle viel viel schneller.
The Speed Limit is 65 mph, but mostly people driving much faster.

Nach der Kleinstadt Shoshone kommt auf der linken Seite vor Amargosa ein kleiner Friedhof. Anscheinend haben vor kurzem  Angehoerige und Freunde der hier Beerdigten, US Flaggen, Blumen und Stofftiere hinterlegt.
After Shoshone, just before Amargosa, there is a small graveyard on your left. It seems to me that family members and friends left some US flaggs, flowers and soft toys.

Gleich wenige hundert Meter weiter, faehrt man nach Amargosa rein. Hier befindet sich ein verlassenes Gebaeude und das ziemlich einsam stehende Amargosa Hotel und Opera House. Es hat eine interessante Geschichte. Marta Becket, Besitzerin, zog es in die Wueste vor ueber 35 Jahren. Sie fand dieses kleine heruntergekommene Theater und verliebte sich darin. Bis heute kuemmert sie sich um ihr Hotel und um das Theater wo sie selber noch auftritt.
Just few hundreds feet further, you will get to the little town Amargosa. Here you can find some old buildings and especially the famous Amargosa Opera House and Hotel which is still owned by Marta Becket. She came to Amargosa over 35 years ago and felt in love with the old Opera House. She took it over and is still performing only in May...

Beatty - hier uebernachtete ich im Phoenix Inn fuer nur $ 43 die Nacht.
I have stayed overnight at the Phoenix Inn in Beatty for only $ 43 per night.

In Beatty kann man guenstiger als sonstwo in dieser Gegend und im DV tanken. Eine Gallone kostet hier um die $ 1 weniger.
And I got gas here for more than a dollar cheaper than elsewhere.

Nur 4 Meilen westlich von Beatty entfernt, liegt Goldwell Open Air Museum und die Geisterstadt Ryholite.
Just 4 Miles west of Beatty lies Goldwell Open Air Museum and the ghost town Rhyolite. The whole area has a gread effect in the late afternoon just before sunset.

Hier steht das bekannte “Bottle House” von Tom Kelly (es gibt aber noch eines im Calico Ghost Town) aus dem Jahr 1905 als Tom schon 76 Jahre alt gewesen ist. Das Haus ist aus ca. 30 000 alten Flaschen gebaut. Er bekam seine Flaschen aus der nur 8000 Anwohner Stadt, welche aber über 53 Saloons verfuegte. Viele der Flaschen sind vom Adolphus Busch Bier, was heute Budweiser ist.

Im Jahr 1910 war die Kleinstadt Rhyolite so gut wie ausgestorben und die Gebaeude wurden nicht mehr Instandgehalten bis aber 1920 die Paramount Studios kamen und das Bottle House renovierten und in einem Film nutzen. Das Haus befand sich später unterm Management von Tommy Thompson und seiner Frau, die das Haus ab 1954 bis 1989 auch als Kuriositaeten Shop nutzten. Hier um Rhyolite wurde um 1904 Quartz gefunden.
In 1907 bekam die Stadt Elektrizitaet und im selbigen Jahr wurde taeglich an die 300 Tonnen Erz produziert. Einige der Minenarbeiter meinten, dass sie an die 10 000 USD am Tag somit machen konnten.

Tom Kelly’s famous “Bottle House” (there is another one in Calico Ghost Town) made by Tom, already aged 76, in 1905. He easily got the 30 000 bottles from the only 8 000 small town with 53 saloons. Every beverage was filled in thick bottles. Most of the bottles are from Adolphus Busch Beer, now well known under Budweiser.
Rhyolite was nearly abandoned by 1910, the town fell in disrepair. The Paramount Studios came in 1920 to make a movie. Therefore they maintained the house. In 1954, Tommy Thompson and his wife took over the management till 1989. They used the Bottle House also as a curiosity shop.
Ore was found in this area in 1904. The town became electricity in 1907. In the same year, they were able to produce about 300 tons of ore a day and some miners claimed that they could produce about $ 10 000 in one day.
