Day trip possible from Los Angeles about 2 1/2 hours drive. Just head East on 10 and take exit to 62 North.
In the Park you will find the famous Joshua trees and very nice rock formations which you can also climb on. If you are lucky you will come across with rabbits, snakes, coyoted (mostly in late afternoon), hawks etc.

In my opinion the best entrance is in the North “West Entrance Station” on 62 North right after Yucca Valley. Park Blvd. is leading into the park. From here you can reach the most interesting parts in the North (nothing really in the South) such as Hidden Valley, Keys
View, Skull, Barker Dam, Ryan Mountain, Lost Horse Mine etc.
If there is not much time, just drive through the Northern part of the park. This could be done within 3 hours, no hikes neccessary.
I have listed my trip through Joshua on this site from North to South.
