The Temple of the Six Banyan Trees is an ancient Buddhist temple originally built in 537 in the Liang Dynasty in Guangzhou, southern China.
The sixth Patriarch Hall was reconstructed in 1913. Enshrined here is the bronze statue of the sixth Patriarch Hineng cast in the 2nd year of the Duan’gong Period in the Song Dynasty (989 AD). The statue, 1.8 meters in height and approx. 1 ton in weight, is a treasured cultural relic of the Temple.
The Burong Pavilion - There were originally 6 ancient banyan trees in the Temple and 2 trees survived in 1913. Monk Tiechan, the then Abbot, planted another 4 banyan trees in the front yard of the sixth Patriarch Hall and built the Burong Pavilion. Only 3 ancient banyan trees remain in the Temple now. Abbot Faliang managed to cast one 2.5 meter and 3 ton bronze Bodhisattva statue inside the Pavilion for worship in 2005.
