I was walking today from the hotel towards Rizal Park which is actually just opposite of my hotel. I passed it to go north to Intramuros.

Poor meets here the upper class - there is a golf course just next to the lively streets.

Intramuros

(spanish/latin) in englisch you could translate it to “within the walls”, is the oldest district of Manila. It is the sight in Manila nowadays. You can still see some old buildings but most of them are in a bad shape.
The defensive wall was constructed by the spanish colonial government in late 16th century to protect the citiy from invasions. Fort Santiago offers the old city protection located at the river. Intramuros was invadet in 1574 by around 3000 chinese pirates. Martin de Goiti, founder of Fort Santiago, fought against the pirates and gave his life. The city was taken back by Juan de Salcedo in 1575.
During the battle to recapture the city from the Japanese Imperial Army during the World War II Intramuros was heavily damaged. Reconstruction of the walls was started in 1951 when Intramuros was declared a National Historical Monument, which is continued to this day by the Intramuros Administration (IA).
