Santa Monica Pier
After 16 months of construction, the pier was opened on September 9, 1909. Thousands of visitors took part.
Charles Loof, designer of theme parks (designed the carousel in Brooklyn on Coney Island) was surprised how the pier drew so many people into its spell. After long discussions with the Santa Monica City Council, he began construction along the pier in 1916. The pier filled with many old Karrusells etc. The pier was enlarged to 270 x 1080 feet.
The pier changed in the 20s and 30s and several storms set to the pier. In the 70s threatened the pier demolition. However, the residents did not want to give up and launched the initiative "Save Our Pier Forever". They wanted to force the pier to be named Historic Landmark, which was then achieved in 1976. In 1981, the Pier Task Force was named to manage the pier to keep it in place
hold. In 1983 two storms destroyed 10 000 feet of the rear part of the pier. The Hippodrome and Roundabout were named National Historic Landmark by the US government. Today, the pier attracts over 3 million visitors a year.

To the left is a visitors and a Rout 66 booth. Actually the Route 66 did not end here, but like 300 meters west. There you can see a mile stone.

The old ferry wheel was replaced with a new one in order to save energy thru LED lights. Below you see it dismounted and the next one shows the new one.

Donald W. Douglas (1892-1981), the early 20th century was a time of great mechanical innovations in America. William Durant at General Motors, Henry Ford, the Dodge brothers and the Studebaker family launched major automobile firms, and William Boeing, the Lockheed brothers and Donald W. Douglas bean their aircraft manufacturing companies. Douglas was just 28 when he arrived in Santa Monica and started his firm in the backroom of a barbershop on Pico Boulevard. Within two decades, the Douglas Aircraft Company had lage, state-of-the-art porduction facilities in Santa Monica and El Segundo and was breaking ground for another in Long Beach. Tens of thousands of homes across the Southland and especially in Santa Monica were built to house the Douglas workforce. Donald Douglas went on to open additional plants in Chicago, Tulsa and Oklahoma City and became czar for all U.S. aircraft production under President Franklin Roosevelt during World War II.

Venice Boardwalk

You find shops and curiosities along Venice Beach. I find it interesting here as this area is kind unusal. Poor, middle class and rich meets here, tourist, locals doing sports or having their lunch, artists, sports people, famous people and homeless. But don’t really look for those rich folks walking around fancy. Sometimes you also smell weed :0) That is Venice Beach. You have to like it or not.

The Venice Canals were built in 1905 inspired by the canals of Venice, Italy and declared in 1983
There are also two similar homes which get decorated for Halloween and christmas. You are also allowed then to walk the front yard and have a look at the enormous decoration. Please ask the owner first before entering their front yard.
Around December 16 (like on Dec 16, 2007) they have a lightshow at the Venice Canals. But you can visit the Canals whenever you want. They are open to the public Please respect the resident’s privacy.
