Salvation Mountain is located near Salton Sea just about 4 miles north/east of Niland, 85 miles/nearly 2 hours south east of Palm Springs and also 190 miles/3.30 hours from Los Angeles. From Freeway 10 East heading to Palm Springs and Joshua Tree Park take 111 South to Mecca and Salton Sea. When reaching Niland take a right turn on Main Street which turns into Beal Road. Keep going on Beal Read till you see Salvation Mountain.
Leonard taking a nap
Leonard lives here without running water, electricity, TV, air-conditioning etc. He usually gets up in the early morning to work on his house and art itself. Feel free to give him a money contribution so that he can buy more paint (which is quite expensive as I know). He covers the mountain with hay and then paints it to convey the message that god loves everyone. He does it for 28 years now and there is no end in sight. Since he is on google, he gets about 400 visitors a day!
Notable to say. This art is located on state land! But Salvation Mountain is under protection now since 2002. It is a national treasure now such as the Watts Tower in Los Angeles.
Thanks for a very interesting visit!
