Los Angeles Downtown Walk

Los Angeles Downtown kann gut zu Fuss erkundet werden. Ich stelle hier einen Walk vor, der einen natuerlich nicht an einem Tag gemacht werden kann, aber fuer diejenigen, die nur eine befristete Zeit dafuer haben, koennen sich evtl. das fuer sie interessantere raussuchen.
You can discover Los Angeles Downtown by foot. It took me more than a day to discover the main spots. If you do not have that much time, just pick out the parts you find of interest.

Downtown ist wahrlich kein Platz wo man ohne Weiteres ein nettes Cafe findet oder es einem eine gute Ausgehmoeglichkeit bietet. Hier muss man schon gut wissen wo es was zur Unterhaltung geboten wird. Downtown soll verbessert und wiederbelebt werden. Allerdings ist bislang Downtown ziemlich “tod” am Abend sowie am Wochenende. Nur einige Bars und Clubs sind gut besucht. Die Obdachlosen beherrschen die meisten Gegenden. Hier wuerde ich von einem Besuch Downtowns am morgen abraten. Die Sicherheit ist nicht garantiert.
Though I personally find LA Downtown very interesting as it developed quite quick and because of its architecture I have to confess that it is not really that kind of tourist place if you wanna stroll around and think you can find a cafe and restaurant at every corner. It is considered like a “dead place” in the evening and on weekends. I would not really consider going there in the early morning. Avoid those parts where are only homeless people. I would not consider it then safe.
If you know your ways around like an insider, you can really enjoy Downtown’s clubs, bars and restaurants also in the evening.

Entweder faehrt man mit dem Wagen nach Downtown und parkt z.B. bei einen der “Auto Parks” wie unten auf dem Foto zu sehen oder an der Strasse entlang wobei man bislang hier sonntags kostenlos parken konnte. Zzt (2010) kann Meter Parking 3 USD die Stunde kosten. Bitte immer alle Hinweissschilder beachten. Oder man gelangt mit dem Bus ueber z.B. Wilshire Blvd. nach Downtown oder mit der U-Bahn.
You can park your car at one of the “Auto Parks” such like the ones on the picture below or you get to Downtown by bus such over Wilshire Blvd. Usually street parking is free of charge on sundays. Please be aware of the signs.

“Ronald Reagan State Building” on 300 South Spring Street, Los Angeles. Oeffnungszeiten: montags-freitags
7 bis 17 Uhr, geschlossen samstags/sonntags.  Open mondays-fridays, 7 am to 5 pm, closed saturdays/sundays.

In der Eingangshalle befindet sich die Wandbemalung “California Dreamscape” von Carlos Almaraz und Elsa Flores in 1990 nebst div. anderen Kunstwerke und ein Gerichtssaal im dritten Stock.
TAKING PICTURES PROHIBITED! There is a mural in the entrance hall by the couple Carlos Almaraz and Elsa Flores called “California Dreamscape” from 1990. There are more artworks beyond the murals as well as a courtroom on the third floor.

Spring Street wurde beachtet als “The Wall Street of the West”. Um Ronald Reagan Building befinden sich Beaux-Arts Gebaeude, die einst Geschaeftsraeumen einen Platz gaben. Auf der Spring Street und unweit vom Ronald Reagan Gebaeude befindet sich die City Hall.
Spring Street was considered as “The Wall Street of the West”. You will see around Ronald Reagan Building some Beaux-Arts Building which housed important businesses. The City Hall is also situated on Spring Street close to Ronald Reagan Building.

Von hier aus laeuft man den “mid walk traffic signal” westlich laufend und ueber Spring Street durch die Arkaden.

Beim Schuhputzer / at the shoe cleaner

Lange Zeit vor LA Downtown und vor allen Laeden und Bueros, den Theatern, lebte hier die Sklavin Biddy Mason, die 3 Toechter hatte. Sie folgte ihrem Master nach Kalifornien in 1851 (sie lief hinter seinem Pferdewagen hinterher). In 1856 ging sie vor Gericht um ihre Freilassung zu erwirken, da der Staat wohl laengst ein Gesetz gegen Sklaverei hat. Biddy gewann und sie liess sich in Los Angeles nieder und arbeitete fortan als Hebamme. 10 Jahre spaeter erwarb sie ein Haus wo sie ein Weisenhaus betrieb. Sie gruendete die erste “First African Methodist Episcopal Church” auf dem Land was sie kaufte und stiftete es der Kirche. Biddy erwarb viele Gruendstuecke wo sich nun Downtown befindet.
Hier an diesem Punkt findet man Biddy’s Geschichte als Gedenktafel.

Biddy Mason Park, Broadway Spring Center, 333 South Spring Street, LA, mo-fri 8am-8pm, sat/sun 9am-8pm.

Long before there was Downtown with its shops, offices and theatres, this area was home to the slave Biddy Mason who had 3 daughters. She walked behind her master’s wagon train to California in 1851. In 1856 she went to court to declare her free as the State of California is anti-slavery. She won her freedon and settled down in Los Angeles to work as a midwife. Ten years later she bought a house where she operated an orphanage. She also founded the First African Methodist Episcopal Church on land she bought and then donated to the  church. She purchased numerous parcels in what is now Downtown.

Bei Verlassen des Bradbury Building sieht man auf der gegenueberliegenden Seite das “Million Dollar Theater”, 307 S. Broadway (leider geschlossen).
Opposite of the Bradbury Building is the “Million Dollar Theatre” closed to public, 307 S. Broadway.

This theatre is one of America’s first motion picture palaces. It was built with a flourish by showman Sid Grauman in 1918, cost USD 1 million, design by William L. Woolett. Charlie Chaplin also attended the opening night on February 1, 1918. The theatre seats 2220, a spanish Colonial cathedral.

Das Gebaeude wurde in 1897 gebaut als ein Warenhaus. In 1917 wurde die unterste Etage umgebaut und von fortan als Market genutzt.
It was built in 1897 as an emporium. The ground floor was remodeled in 1917 as a market.
