Diese 55 Meilen lange, eines der bekanntesten Strassen in Los Angeles, wurde benannt nach dem Ingenieur William Mulholland.

Der westliche Teil heisst "Mulholland Highway". Es bietet einem den Blick auf einen Teil von Los Angeles
(u.a. Downtown) sowie San Fernando Valley (u.a. Universal Studios und Warner Bros.). Der Teil zwischen Cahuenga Pass in Hollywood bis Sepulveda Blvd. hiess urspruenglich "Mulholland Highway" und wurde in 1924 eroeffnet.

Die Strasse windet sich an die 15 km von Nahe der 101 in Hollywood bis hin zur Kueste im Westen. Leider kann man den Mulholland Drive nicht komplett durchfahren, da der “mittlere” Teil nicht nur eine Sandstrasse ist, sondern auch gesperrt. Die Sandstrasse beginnt auf Hoehe von Encino Hills Drive an und endet auf Hoehe von Santa Maria Road. Einen kleinen Teil kann man reinfahren. Wandern oder Radfahren moeglich. Immerhin bietet dieser Weg von etwas mehr als 6 Meilen ein paar schoene Aussichtsmoeglichkeiten.

Mulholland Drive wurde in Film und Fernsehen, in der Musik und in einigen Buechern sowie Computerspielen verewigt. Auch ein Ride im Disneyland California Adventure namens "Mulholland Madness" soll es geben.

“King of the Mountain” ist ein Film indem auch der Mulholland Drive eine Rolle spielt. Hier wurde ein Autorennen inszeniert. In dem Film spielte Dennis Hopper, Harry Hamlin etc. mit.
Mulholland Drive inspirierte die Musikgruppe R.E.M. zum Song “Electrolite”.
Mulholland Drive wird also erwaehnt in dem Song “Free Fallin” von Tom Petty.

Mulholland a 55 mile long road is one of the most famous streets in Los Angeles. It was named after the Ingenieur William Mulholland. It has views over both sides Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley.
A part of the streeet is also called “Mulholland Highway”. It offers great overlooks over Los Angeles, Downtown, San Fernando Vally, Universal Studios, Warner Bros. Studios etc. The part between Cahuenga Pass in Hollywood up to Sepulveda Blvd. was formerly called “Mulholland Highway” and was opened in 1924.
Mulholland Drive is quite a trip as it curves endlessly for about 9 miles from 101 in Hollywood to the coast in the West. Unfortunately, it is not possible to drive it through completly. In the “middle” there is an about 6 mile dirt road which you can only drive for few hundred feet till a blockade. Here you can walk this dirt road or ride your bike. It is worth it as you have great views over the cities and hills/mountains. The dirt road starts at about Encino Hills Drive and ends near Santa Maria Road.

Bitte lasst keine Wertsachen im Auto liegen, wenn ihr die Aussichtspunkte besucht. Ab und zu werden die Autos aufgebrochen und leider verfolgt die Polizei diese Vorfaelle nicht immer.

Bevor es losgeht, gibt es hier noch ein paar offizielle Regeln, die bitte zu beachten sind vor allem, das Verbot des Rauchens!!!
Dies ist in allen Huegeln und im Gebirge verboten aufgrund hoher Feuergefahr.
Before you start your trip on Mulholland, please be advised about the following rules. Keep away from smoking as this is highly prohibited in the hills and mountains.

Aussichtspunkte, die ich etwas westlich des 101 Freeway in Hollywood an angefahren habe.
-- Anfang des Mulholland Drives befindet sich an Cahuenga Blvd., welches neben Fwy 101 verlaeuft. --

An der zweiten Kurve auf dem Mulholland hat man einen Blick auf die auf Stelzen gebauten Haeuser. Ein deutscher Architekt wuerde sicherlich einen Infarkt bekommen.
At the second curve you can see some stilted houses. A German architect would get a heart attack if he sees those.

First overlook to your left “Hollywood Bowl Overlook”

Wenn man auf dem Parkplatz ist, geht links ab noch ein Weg hoch. Man laeuft die Stufen hoch, aber bevor man ganz oben ist, sollte man rechts von diesem Outlook ueber einen sandigen schmalen Weg (Vorsicht geboten) laufen. Man laeuft den Huegel somit wieder etwas runter. Von dort aus kann man gut Fotos von Downtown (siehe links) machen und auch vom Griffith Observatory und Hollywood Sign.
From the parking you have a great view over Los Angeles. There are steps to your left. From up the hill you have also a view to the Hollywood Sign and the Griffith Observatory as well as the Hollywood Bowl.

3. rechts, "Universal Overlook" mit Blick auf Universal Studios. Man kann von hier sogar die Explosion von der Show "Waterworld" sehen.
Hinter Universal Studios befindet sich "Warner Bros."
To your right “Mulholland Scenic Overlook” with a view over the Universal Studios. If you come at the right time you can also see the explosion from “Waterworld”. Behind the Universal Studios you sie WB for Warner Bros. on a water tank. They made the sign bigger so that the people from the Universal Studios see them better.

5. rechts "Nancy Hoover Pohl Overlook" am Fryman Canyon. Nancy Hoover lebte 60 Jahre am Fryman Canyon und kaempfte fuer die Erhaltung des Cross Mountain Park, Coldwater Canyon Park, Willacre Park und Fryman Canyon. Sie war auch verantwortlich fuer die Gruendung des 5 Meilen langen "Betty B. Dearing Mountain Trail", welches zu eines der gesuendesten Trails im Oestlichen Teil von Santa Monica Bergen sein soll.
To your right: “Nancy Hoover Pohl Overlook” at Fryman Canyon. Nancy Hoover lived for about 60 years at the Fryman Canyon and enganged for preserving Cross Mountain Park, Coldwater Canyon Park, Willacre Park and Fryman Canyon. She is the founder of the 5 miles “Betty B. Dearing Mountain Trail” which is supposed to be the healthiest Trail East of Santa Monica Mountains.

6. rechts "Overlook" befindet sich in der Linkskurve. Kurz danach kommt auf der rechten Seite nochmal der “gleiche” Overlook, der aber leichter zugaenglich ist.
To the right “Overlook” is directly at the left curve following another stop just few feet further which is better accessible.

7. "Barbara A. Fine Overlook" nach ca. 1/2 Meil zur Rechten / overlook is just about 1/2 mile further.

Danach bitte aufpassen, da sich an der Kreuzung die Strasse teilt in (links ab) Coldwater Canyon und (geradeaus) Mulholland W.
Hereafter be careful. Keep going on Mulholland West (straight on).

Gleich danach kommt wieder eine Abbiegung. Hier bitte links auf Mulholland Drive abfahren (rechts waere Coldwater Canyon).
Shortly after, you have to turn left to stay on Mulholland Drive (right turn would be Coldwater Canyon).

Dieser Overlook ist gewidmet Anton Calleia, Mitglied des Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, 1983-1994, fuer ihre unendlichen Bemuehungen die Naturschoenheit Los Angeles zu erhalten. Stone Canyon Reservoir liefert Wasser fuer die Angelinos und Natur fuer Tiere. 225 acres offenes Land umgibt das Reservoir was Wasser bietet und Lebensraum fuer Koyoten, Rehe, Pumas und andere wilde Tiere.

Stone Canyon Overlook is dedicated to Anton Calleia, Member of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, 1983-1994, for his leadership and tireless effort to preserve the scenic beauty of Los Angeles.
The Stone Canyon reservoir provides drinking water for the people of Los Angeles and precious open space for wildlife. The 225 acres of open land surrounding the reservoir help the Department of Water and Power maintain clean water and serve as an isolated refuge for coyotes, deer, bobcats, and a wide variety of birdlife.
