The tar pits are containing hard bacteria bubbles which releases toxic methane gases. You can still see it popping up. Plenty of bones of mammoth etc. were found here and are still found. They recently had a baby mammoth on display which was also found in the tar pits.

Antique Bison - Bison Antiquus
The Antique Bison is the most common plant eater found at Rancho La Brea. At least 159 of these animals have been retrieved. This extinct bison had a larger body, greater shoulder hump and longer horns than the modern buffalo.
